June 30, 2009 By: areta Category: Celeb & Entertainment

Britney Spears’ Circus World Tour carries on and word from overseas is she’s having several steamy love affairs — one with London and the other with her agent, Jason Trawick. Man, she sure gets around! She was also spotted (clothes fully intact) lunching at McDonald’s with her kids. Britney is undoubtedly on her best behavior — probably won’t be seeing any scandalous crotch shots anytime soon.

Lindsay Lohan claims her Twitter account was hacked when tweets appeared about her ex Samantha Ronson cheating on her. Now everything is OK, she claims the real her is back in the Twitterverse.

Jessica Alba in trouble with the law? Apparently she was caught plastering shark conservation posters over other posters advertising children’s charity United Way. Thank goodness her official apology got her off the hook — celebrity status and the power of its sway!

The Delicious Raw Coconut

June 29, 2009 By: areta Category: Celeb & Entertainment

Mmm the coconut! So many of us love it, in our pina coladas, tasty baked goods, and savory seafood. But believe it or not, in its young, raw form the coconut and its water is better for us than most other beverages we can get our hands on. Coconut water is found in young Thai coconuts and is rich in vitamins, and protein with little fat and zero cholesterol. It is more nutritious than whole milk, has less calories than orange juice and better than processed baby milk because it contains lauric acid which is present in natural mother’s milk. One other interesting fact is that coconut water is a “universal donor” because it’s naturally sterile and identical to human blood plasma. It has saved many lives in 3rd world countries through coconut IV!

One challenging issue about these healthy delicatessens is that they are so darn difficult to open!! Thanks to Bam over at Raw Pirate Gourmet, getting to the coconutty good stuff is made easy! Watch Bam open a young Thai coconut with a meat cleaver…

It all started in the 1970s when Michael Jackson entered the spotlight as a child star. He was quite the trendsetter — rocking bell bottoms, fringed tops, platforms and of course, the essential 70s afro.

When Michael Jackson reached early adulthood, he started dressing more streamlined and sleek — often seen clad in tuxedo jackets, tight skinny pants, shiny shoes and those trademark exposed white socks. This look really stuck and impacted the fashion world (Tuxedo Appeal). However, his most iconic getup had to be when the “Thriller” video came out in 1983 — where MJ introduced the notorious red, be-zippered leather jacket:

Feng Shui for Boosted Energy!

June 23, 2009 By: areta Category: Health & Fitness, Lifestyle

Do you ever wake up after a full night’s sleep and still feel completely drained? Elizabeth Chamberlain of Space Lift shows us how to change the home to change your life, with inside feng shui secrets to rearrange your room and Boost Your Energy… Elizabeth discusses EMFs, otherwise know as electromagnetic fields, which sound like something out of a complicated science-fiction film, but actually have a very real and potentially harmful effect on our sleep, health and overall energy level. Some scientist say EMFs can even be responsible for life threatening issues such as brain tumors, birth defects, miscarriages, chronic fatigue, headaches, heart problems, and stress. But in the least, EMFs cause unrest, and we all need our beauty sleep!
Although they are invisible to the human eye, it is important to understand where EMFs come from. Simple household items like your phone, your TV, even your alarm clock emanate EMFs, interrupting important sleep patters and relaxation time, especially in the bedroom. Because we spend an average of eight hours in our sleeping area, any feng shui expert will stress time and time again that the bedroom is a place for rest, relaxation and intimacy. The bedroom should be reserved to recharge, so an overabundance of gadgets and EMFs will ultimately result in a potentially unhappy, unhealthy person!

Watch what the Space Lift team does to fix this tragically EMF infested room…

If you like feng shui tips be sure and check out the other Space Lift episodes, on MeVIO Women.

Kombucha: Soft Drink for the 21st Century

June 22, 2009 By: osperanza Category: Celeb & Entertainment

By Jennifer Adler, M.S., C.N.
Popping the cap off a bottle of kombucha—or “mushroom tea,” as it’s known by some—is a complete sensory experience. There’s the snap, crackle and fizz of carbonated bubbles, the visual display of mysterious slimy globules that slow-float as if in a psychedelic lava lamp, and the sharp vinegary tang that hits the nose like a slap. While fizzy, vinegary and slimy are not exactly the most tantalizing food descriptors, this trendy tea has a peculiar allure that’s winning devotees nationwide. At Google’s California corporate headquarters, the cafeteria slings upwards of 100 cups of homemade brew a day, and GT’s Kombucha, one of the most popular bottled brands on the market, reaps annual sales in the millions.

Kombucha may be one of the latest fads, but the stringy, tan-colored concoction has a lengthy history. Its roots stretch back to ancient China, where, as early as 221 BC, a tea called “the remedy for immortality” was brewed from fungi said to have magical properties. Kombucha eventually made its way into the natural health world of Germany in the early twentieth century, before debuting in the United States among the health-thirsty flower children of the 1960s.

The Mother Sip
Kombucha is not actually a mushroom at all, but a symbiotic colony of yeast and beneficial bacteria that grows in sugar-sweetened black tea. As in any yeast, a “mother” creates or buds a new “baby” with each new batch. Yeast budding makes it very convenient to share and “pass on” the kombucha craze. Owners of the brown, pancake-sized kombucha mothers have the option to start their own colony by placing the newly budded babes in a mixture of black tea and sugar. Left to rest in a warm, peaceful place, the colony grows until the black tea liquid reaches its desired flavor, in a few days or weeks.

“I can see that kombucha has live-culture benefits,” offers Sandor Ellix Katz, author of Wild Fermentation. “But when you can ferment vegetables, milk, beans, honey and so many more wholesome foods, why focus your fermentation practice around sugar and tea?”

Maybe it’s the ancient folklore or maybe it’s the “mother” infatuation. Whatever it is, this bubbly beverage has its own niche in the marketplace, and even Katz admits to drinking and enjoying it.

“I do believe that kombucha is full of beneficial live-cultures and enzymes,” he says. “But I am skeptical of the many miracle health claims that people make on its behalf.”

Kombucha’s Health Claims
Some of those health claims include: facilitating detoxification, boosting metabolism, assisting digestion and even curing cancer. Advocates believe that kombucha works by assisting the liver’s ability to detoxify the body. This hypothesis is due to early observations of increased glucuronic acid conjugates in the urine after kombucha consumption, a signifier of increased detoxification by the liver. However, more recent analysis of kombucha offers other explanations for its potential health benefits. First, kombucha’s high levels of organic acids help maintain proper acid/alkaline balance in the body by promoting tissue and blood alkalinity. The fermented brew is also rich in antioxidants and amino acids, namely L-threonine, which supports healthy protein balance.

A Cornell University study on the tea’s anti-microbial activity found that kombucha’s acetic acid content rendered it helpful against a range of pathogenic bacteria. But beyond this sole study, no authoritative research has been performed to prove or disprove the anecdotal raves of kombucha converts.

In addition to its potential properties as a liver booster, kombucha is loaded with enzymes and healthy bacteria thought to enhance the digestive process. Kombucha drinkers swear by the drink as a preventative for post-meal heartburn and acid reflux. Some rely on the fizzy bite of kombucha as an energy boost to battle the dreaded mid-afternoon slump (the tea’s copious quantities of B-vitamins make it a great caffeine-free energy drink).

If intrigued, start your own colony, or try your luck with some readily available bottled kombucha, and see if this magical elixir is a match for you.

Britney Spears Yearns for a Normal Life!

June 19, 2009 By: areta Category: Celeb & Entertainment

The latest celebrity dirt is in — line up, people, and get it while it’s hot!

Megastar Britney Spears wishes she had a normal life! That’s right, she wants to be in bed before 10:00, eat her Wheaties (Breakfast of Champions), floss and call her mother everyday. Or something like that. Sounds like her world tour — currently blazing through London — is getting her down. Poor Britney. It’s a rough life, that celebritydom.

The headlines have been dominated by The Hills power couple, Speidi = Heidi Montag + Spencer Pratt. Apparently, they went on a Costa Rican-jungle-rainforest-moon-safari (or something along those lines) and got tortured and attacked by a crocodile!!! Or did they? Whatever misadventures they got into, Heidi came down with a tummy ache and ended up in the hospital. Word from the jungle is.. it was caused by some sort of “spiritual” fasting! Yikes.

Paris Hilton and Doug Reinhart have split up (TEARS!) — who broke up with who? Her publicist says one thing, his another. We may never know. Get over it.

And finally, OMG! Lindsay Lohan has been accused of stealing jewelry! Sorry to report, but you may need to find yourself another teen star to look up to.

Get the gruesome details on all these stories plus more with our favorite British gossip girl in today’s episode of OK! Insider:
